A stroke of words

The Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD) – Association of Artists of Various Resources was founded in 1962. Since its inception, APAD has successfully organised twenty-eight art exhibitions.

The last “Contemporary” art exhibition was held in February 2000 last year. The slightly longer interval was deliberate. It gives APAD the opportunity to plan longer and provided members with ample time to create their individual ‘masterpiece’. The long wait for members and viewers is most worthwhile, as APAD has managed to select 41 of the best works from 25 artists for this exhibition.

“Contemporary 2001” shows a wider expression of the artists and their individualistic styles or choices. The collective works are certainly commendable in their artistic execution and presentation. Interestingly, a number of the works are still steep in traditions and roots, which are closely identified to some of these artists. At the same time, both younger and veteran artists have presented similarities in certain art form. However, they have chosen to express their works differently in their own individualistic style using a variety of mediums, which they are accustomed to. The choice of medium is also worth noting. Besides oil, watercolour and acrylic, there are other works executed in ink, batik, clay and photography. Upon a closer look, this exhibition will present not only paintings but also 3-dimensional works by trained artists who have graduated from art institutions and university as well as self-taught artists and newcomers.

This exhibition also provides a golden opportunity to present fresh ta-lents and hopefully produces potential new artists. Apparently, age is not a barrier to artistic creativity. “Contemporary 2001” will be presenting five fresh talents from APAD. They are Mr Haji Wandly Yazid(76), MrMuhammad Rizal Bin Mustafa (25), Ms Norhashidah Bte Hasim (20), MsRuoshidah Yip (27) and Mr Suhirman Sulaiman (23).

With such an interesting and colourful combinations, “Contemporary 2001” will be a memorable and enjoyable exhibition organised by APAD.
