The Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD) – Association of Artists of Various Resources is a non-profit organization founded in 1962. Since its interception, APAD has successfully organized numerous exhibitions. “reACTION – sangkar” is APAD’s art exhibition project for this year. APAD considers such art exhibitions as part of its contribution towards a culturally vibrant society in Singapore.

“ACTION” series of art exhibitions was first introduced in 1990. Since then, there were follow up in 1991 and 1994. Thirteen artists participated in the last ACTION exhibition and painting was the primary medium. The main objectives then were to expose the latest works by young members in particular, and other with innovative ideas.

The “re” in ACTION is a revival of ACTION series that has been shelved for 12 years. Besides providing an opportunity for new and young members to showcase their works, it also serves as a catalyst for them to challenge their own perspective and ideas towards a given theme thus developing their own art-making and beliefs.

“reACTION” 2006 revolves around the theme “sangkar”. “Sangkar” means cage. The theme is being referred to a place or even feeling of enclosure, entrapment and boundary. Why “Sangkar”? As artists, there’s the need for us to break free from the idea of entrapment. Entrapment from established or traditional values which we uphold, sometimes even conservative, expectations of art making in pursuit of individual identity. There are not only to break free but to take notice, how far we as artists are willing to go beyond one’s own boundary. This exhibition aims to introduce our young artists to challenge a situation, to view or think about themselves and their practice from within or beyond the idea of entrapment. Are we just confining only to our own little space?
