Kampong is a word in Malay meaning Village.

In this year’s Contemporary Art Show, APAD explores the ideas and issues concerning ‘Kampong’ via its definition and reinterprets its ideologies; aesthetical values and principles. Such ideologies may be derived from historical, socio-geographical, economic, cultural and belief standpoints. In exploring the theme of the exhibition, the artworks feature the idyllic and picturesque ‘kampong’ as well as more conceptual approaches, through both conventional and experimental works of painting, drawing and multimedia installation. A video will be screened for viewers to better understand the exhibition and production of the artworks through interviews with participating artists.

In conjunction with this exhibition, public programs like open workshop sessions introducing batik painting, outdoor drawing, and calligraphy will be held under a collective event titled Kampong Vie. These programs hope to enhance the exhibition and add a 'kampong feel' to the environment. Selected locations within the venue will be transformed into a ’kampong’ via a plethora of activities, each distinct in its flavour and charm. Other events include a four-day graffiti garden and a flea-market, generating a fun-filled atmosphere for all.

This exhibition is in partnership with Taman Warisan Melayu (Malay Heritage Centre) as part of its 2nd Anniversary celebrations.
